Understanding depression

Just like diabetes or high blood pressure, depression is an illness, due to a build up of life pressures. Most of us don’t go around inviting undesirable circumstance into our lives. Still, from time to time we do need to cope with them when we find ourselves in that kind of situation. There are numerous life events that can bring the feelings of depression in our lives. Events such as the death of a loved one, serious illness, the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, financial problems are often negative and traumatic and cause great stress for many people. On the other hand, it is not uncommon for depression to emerge as a result of positive life events such as getting married, having a child, moving to a new city, or starting a new job. While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely when undesirable events hit them. Depression is more than just feeling sad – it’s a serious condition that has an impact on both physical and mental health.
